IYT Certification Explained
Get Certified
Which sailing certification you actually need, what each level costs, and how the IYT path takes you from first lesson to chartering yachts worldwide.
The Standard
What Is IYT Sailing Certification?
IYT stands for International Yacht Training Worldwide, one of the most widely recognized sailing certification bodies on earth. Its qualifications are accepted by charter companies and maritime authorities in more than 100 countries.
What makes an IYT certificate worth carrying is how you earn it. There is no online shortcut. An instructor watches you handle a real yacht in real conditions and signs off only when you can genuinely do the job. That is exactly why a charter company on the other side of the world will hand you the keys to a 50 foot boat on the strength of it.
What It Costs
Sailing Certification Cost, by Level
| Course | Duration | Certification earned | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intro to Sailing | 3 days | IYT International Crew | $1,285 |
| Intermediate (Day Skipper) | 4 days | IYT Day Skipper | $1,715 |
| Become the Captain | 7 days | Bareboat Skipper, ICC and VHF | $2,995 |
Each price includes your instruction and the certification you earn. For a full breakdown of what is and is not included, read our sailing certification cost guide.
The Path
The Three Levels, Explained
Our courses map directly onto the IYT pathway. Each one is a complete certification on its own, and each one builds on the last.
1. Intro to Sailing, IYT International Crew
Three days, zero experience required. You learn the fundamentals as working crew: steering, sail handling, knots, and the language of the boat. You leave able to be a genuinely useful pair of hands on any yacht. Read more in our International Crew guide.
2. Day Skipper, IYT Day Skipper
Four days. You move from crew to skipper, taking the helm and running a yacht on day passages. Docking, anchoring, navigation, and crew management all come together at this level.
3. Become the Captain, IYT Bareboat Skipper with ICC and VHF
Seven days, and the level that changes everything. You earn the Bareboat Skipper certificate, the International Certificate of Competence, and a VHF radio license. Together they qualify you to charter yachts up to 60 feet, on your own, in most of the world. Our Bareboat Skipper guide covers exactly what you will learn.
Compare the Systems
IYT vs ASA vs RYA
Three certification systems dominate the English speaking sailing world. All three teach sound seamanship. The practical difference is where each one is recognized and how quickly you can earn it.
| IYT | ASA | RYA | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it is recognized | Worldwide, 100+ countries | Mainly the United States | Mainly the UK and Europe |
| Chartering abroad | Broadly accepted | Sometimes questioned outside the US | Widely accepted in Europe |
| Time to first certificate | One week | A few weekends | Several courses |
| Includes the ICC pathway | Yes | No | Yes |
For sailors who want a qualification that travels, IYT is hard to beat. Its certificates are built around international recognition, and the pathway includes the ICC, the document most European countries expect from a visiting skipper.
The Extras
What the ICC and VHF License Are
The ICC, International Certificate of Competence
The ICC is a widely recognized proof of skippering competence, especially across Europe and the Mediterranean. Many countries expect a visiting skipper to hold one before chartering, and inland waterways often require it. It is included in our Become the Captain course.
The VHF Radio License
A VHF marine radio is how you call for help, request bridge and lock openings, and speak to marinas and other vessels. Operating one legally requires a short certification, which we cover as part of the same course.
Why It Matters
A License the Whole World Recognizes
IYT certifications are accepted by charter companies and maritime authorities in most of the world. An instructor has watched you handle a real yacht, which is exactly what makes the certificate worth carrying.

Answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Which sailing certification do I need?
It depends on your goal. To be capable crew, the IYT International Crew certificate is enough. To skipper day trips, add the Day Skipper. To charter a yacht on your own anywhere in the world, you want the Bareboat Skipper certificate with an ICC, which is what our Become the Captain course delivers.
Is IYT recognized in the United States?
Yes. IYT is an internationally recognized standard and is accepted by charter operators in the United States and abroad. Because it is built around global recognition, it travels better than most domestic only certifications.
Is IYT recognized worldwide for chartering?
Yes. IYT certifications are accepted by charter companies and maritime authorities in more than 100 countries. The Bareboat Skipper certificate with an ICC is one of the most broadly accepted qualifications for chartering abroad.
How much does it cost to get sailing certified?

Do sailing certifications expire?

Do I need a license to charter a yacht?
For a bareboat charter, where you sail without a professional captain, nearly every company requires a recognized skipper certification such as the IYT Bareboat Skipper with an ICC. Our charter prep page walks through the full picture.
